My Story

Did you have any preconceptions about Switzerland before you came here?

I did not have that many preconceptions about Switzerland prior to coming, except that it is a great country for skiing and hiking.

Which preconceptions turned out to be true and which not?

Switzerland is indeed a wonderful place for skiing, with the scenery in the mountains by far surpassing my expectations in every way. The slopes are also a lot steeper than anything I had experienced prior. After coming to Switzerland, I really learned to appreciate how nature can play a part in general well-being.

What do you/did you particularly like about your programme of study?

I liked that there are several options for specialization of my MA degree, as well as a General Master’s option. First and foremost, I was surprised to see many courses where the curriculum was contemporary (such as FinTech & InsurTech, Marketing Science Seminar, Research Marketing Seminar) or offered more nuanced and ethical perspectives (Digital Ethics)

What has been your favourite class?

It’s hard to pick one, but to mention a few: FinTech & InsurTech, where we heard many presentations from guest speakers of small and large Swiss companies. Even having the opportunity of visiting the Crypto valley in Zug. We were then given the freedom to create and conceptualize a digital solution and present it. Marketing Science Seminar, where we examined recent marketing papers on topics that affect our daily lives. Research Marketing Seminar, where we were able to conduct our own survey with real-world participants and analysed the data. It fully captured my enthusiasm building a survey revolved around TikTok content, and how that captures people’s interest.

What makes the University of Lucerne special/different in your view?

The University of Lucerne offers the environment of a large university whilst also having some classes that feel small and close-knit. This gives you the best of both worlds. As you will feel that you are part of a large community but also have lecturers/professors that are very approachable. What I also cherish is that the university administration is so helpful, it’s been a breath of fresh air having university administration that are always trying to help you if they can.

What is it like to study in Lucerne as an international student?

Often rated as the most beautiful city in Switzerland, you will have lots of things to explore in your free time. With many scenic spots in the city as well as in the surrounding areas. Such as Mount Rigi, Mount Pilatus, and you’re only a quick 45-minute train ride to the ski slopes of Engelberg for your weekends. It’s also very convenient if you’re commuting from Zurich with frequent trains in between cities every hour. The master’s programme is in English and has many exchange students and international students, so communication is very convenient if you’re an international student.

What will you miss most about the university once you finish your studies?

I will certainly miss the view of Lake Lucerne from the rooms on the 4th floor. As well as being able to explore the city on a nice summer’s day. I will miss the flexibility of an academic life, with its rhythms of lectures and seminars. I will also certainly miss the feeling of accomplishment/euphoria of stepping outside into the city after the last exam of the semester.
