The University of Teacher Education NMS Bern trains kindergarten and primary school (classes 1 to 6) teachers in a stimulating learning environment in Bern City centre. Students graduate with the Bachelor of Arts in Primary Education.

Study at the University of Teacher Education NMS Bern

Situated in Bern City centre (5 minutes’ walk from the main railway station), the University of Teacher Education NMS trains around 260 kindergarten and primary school teachers (classes 1 to 6). Some 70 teachers complete their studies each year at the University of Teacher Education NMS Bern with the teaching diploma that is recognized throughout Switzerland. The University trains 25% of the German-speaking kindergarten and primary school teachers in the Canton of Bern. Students at this university appreciate its culture and the stimulating learning environment in manageable seminar groups. The training is comprehensive, practical and personal. The study courses provide broad musical and creative training. In addition, all the students are given an opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. Tuition fees are the same as those charged at other teacher training universities. The profile of the research and development area includes a teaching focus on “Music at primary schools”, “Digital writing” and “Empirical media impact research.” The NMS has been training teachers since 1853. The establishment had been attached to PHBern Teacher Training University since its inception in 2001. Since February 2023, NMS Bern has been a teacher training university in its own right.

Advanced training and services

The NMS provides advanced training for teachers, partly in cooperation with PHBern Teacher Training University. It provides services for partner organisations and in the development of teaching resources.
